My old friend from college, Transit Librarian, will not be amused. There are just two problems with mass transit. Nobody uses it, and it costs like hell. Only 4% of Americans take public transportation to work. Even in cities they don't do it. Less than 25% of commuters in the New York metropolitan area use public transportation. Elsewhere it's far less--9.5% in San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, 1.8% in Dallas-Fort Worth. As for total travel in urban parts of America--all the comings and goings for work, school, shopping, etc.--1.7 % of those trips are made on mass transit. RTWT. Give It Up, Moonbats
James Taranto is reporting that even Jon Stewart sees the righting on the wall. Transcript from the Daily Show, the guest is former Clinton aide Nancy Soderberg: Stewart: But what do you make of--here's my dilemma, if you will. I don't care for the way these guys conduct themselves--and this is just you and I talking, no cameras here [audience laughter]. But boy, when you see the Lebanese take to the streets and all that, and you go, "Oh my God, this is working," and I begin to wonder, is it--is the way that they handled it really--it's sort of like, "Uh, OK, my daddy hits me, but look how tough I'm getting." You know what I mean? Like, you don't like the method, but maybe--wrong analogy, is that, uh--? Soderbergs reply: Soderberg: Well, I think, you know, as a Democrat, you don't want anything nice to happen to the Republicans, and you don't want them to have progress. How sad that so many have to hope for a negative outcome because they hate the President. Aren't we all supposed to be Americans and hope for the best for our country? Aren't we all supposed to be human and hope for what is best for humanity? At least Soderberg tries to distance herself from that hard core moonbat contingency: But as an American, you hope good things would happen. I think the way to look at it is, they can't credit for every good thing that happens, but they need to be able to manage it. I think what's happening in Lebanon is great, but it's not necessarily directly related to the fact that we went into Iraq militarily. More select quotes: Stewart: He's gonna be a great--pretty soon, Republicans are gonna be like, "Reagan was nothing compared to this guy." Like, my kid's gonna go to a high school named after him, I just know it. Great stuff, heady times. And Dems, for God's sake, get off the negativity bandwagon before it is too late. Remember what happened after the Berlin wall fell (well after Bush Sr.) - 8 years of Clintonian paradise! Don't be AWOL when the time for centrist politics will soon be upon us again. Taranto's analysis: We've long been skeptical of Jon Stewart, but color us impressed. He managed to ambush this poor woman brutally, in a friendly interview. She was supposed to be promoting her book, and instead he got her to spend the entire interview debunking it (at least if we understood the book's thesis correctly from the very brief discussion of it up top). Update: More, from Ace, addressing the "Bush lied" and "Bush changed the reason for invading Iraq" varieties of moonbat: It's quite annoying to have liberals claim now that they were "misled" about one of the main arguments for liberating Iraq. We made this argument repeatedly; they dismissed it out-of-hand as pure fantasy, unwilling to even consider it. By infidel cowboy · 03.02.05 11:56AM · Link · Comments (2) ·
